A first half strike from Daryl Duffy and the second half equalizer from super sub Marcus Mascarenhas made sure that things ended all square at PJN Stadium Fatorda in what could be called a fantastic Goan Derby. The half time score board was tilted in favour of the greens.
In what could be called a total entertainment Sporting and Salgaocar FC played out a 1 – 1 draw as both resorted to a rather cautious approach in the derby. The Flaming Oranje gaffer made one change to the side as Subhashish Bose came in place of the experienced Ravanan who picked up a red card in the previous match. The Greens shuffled a bit from their previous match as the new head coach handed starts to Nicolau Colaco, Martin Scott and Gilbert Olivera.
Sporting were explosive right from start with Odafa at the helm of proceedings when he latched on to a ball from deep to get his first shot off in style, but lacked direction. In the first 15 minutes Sporting created at-least 3 convincing chances as Seriton managed some dangerous crosses from the right trying to find the skipper in a thickly flooded green box. The next best chance for Sporting came through Mahmoud who saw his attempt being cleared by some fine defending.
In the 23rd minute Salgaocar FC shifted gears as Gilbert Olivera managed to surprise everyone with a sudden long range effort only to see the best of Arindam Bhattacharya who definitely saved the evening in more than one occasion for Sporting. Finally in the 26th minute Daryl Duffy managed to score for Salgaocar in-spite of a brilliant effort on the goal line by Seriton Fernandes. The visitors soon dropped deep and reduced the tempo frustrating the Sporting forwards who failed to get past the populated green half. The Salgaocar FC successfully hung on to the lead at half time as they made a more satisfactory walk back into the tunnel before switching over.
Second half saw the Flaming Oranje coming all out at the greens as Mateus Costa added the much needed pace to his side through a late first half substitution in Ganesh Thakur and introduction of Marcus Mascarenhas in the early second. The duo made an instant impact as Ganesh and Marcus whizzed past the Salgaocar defense creating the much needed cracks in what was a compact green half. Their effort finally paid off when Marcus set Odafa up nicely with a cross in the 78th minute only to see the skippers attempt being blocked by Karanjit, but the former latched on to the rebound to put things back on level terms.
Towards the final quarter Sporting steeped up their offence with Odafa and Marcus coming close to scoring some brilliant goals but neither of them could get the precision right. The injury time saw back to back efforts at both ends with the best coming for Salgaocar when Semboi Haokip’s finally managed to beat Arindam only to realize the flag being up. With this draw Sporting climb above Shillong to the 5th position with 8 points while Salgaocar continue to be at the bottom with 2.
